Jet Ski Tips for Beginners

Using a jet ski or any small, speedy watercraft is a highly popular and thrilling outdoor activity. One of the best things about jet skiing is that you really only need to know the basics to understand how to safely operate the craft. We at Lake Mead encourage you to follow these tips and tricks to help you get a better understanding of jet skiing, and be sure to give us a call today if you have any questions about our hours!

  • Be prepared. Check all of the requirements from your rental location to make sure it’s legal for you to ride and/or operate the jet ski. You’ll also want to make sure that everyone is wearing a life jacket, you have all of your required documentation and paperwork, and that you have enough fuel for the day.

  • Always prioritize safety. Ensure that all passengers are wearing lifejackets, and make sure they fit properly. A life jacket should be secure enough around that they cannot be lifted by the shoulders up past your ears, but lose enough that breathing is not impeded in any way.

  • Understand the specific type of watercraft you will be on. No two jet ski models are exactly alike, although they all will have similar enough functions. Make sure you know how to accelerate, brake, and where the emergency power-down switch is. Most jet skis have an emergency shut-off clip, a lanyard that you can use to attach yourself to the jet ski as a precautionary measure.

  • Make sure all passengers are seated comfortably, then start slowly. Stay close to the shoreline until you get familiar with how the jet ski feels, how sensitive the throttle is, etc. Firmly grasp the handles and don’t exceed 10 miles per hour. Practice your turns at a slow speed, since most jet ski models require acceleration while turning. Lean into direction of the turn and keep it steady. Practice several turns before heading into the open water, making sure you are comfortable balancing while taking short, fast turns.

  • Once you have enough practice, you can gently increase your speed and and head out into deeper waters. Don’t increase too suddenly or you risk being thrown off the craft or causing a collision. Understand that as you pick up speed, the nose of the jet ski will rise up out of the water and angle slightly upward. This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the craft is out of control or going too fast!

  • Riding wakes and waves. Getting some air time is the most fun part, aside from just speeding along, but it takes a careful hand. Just don’t take on a wave or the wake of a larger boat too fast or you’ll roughly plow through it instead of getting a good jump.

  • Brace for impact. Once the jet ski lifts slightly out of the water, brace yourself by standing up slightly. Just lift yourself a few inches out of your seat to lessen the impact on your body when the craft returns to the surface of the water.

  • Take careful note of your surroundings. Most bodies of water are clear and not crowded, but most of the time, everyone operating a watercraft is too busy thinking about themselves to watch out for others. So pay attention to any approaching craft.

  • Although it should go without saying, never operate or ride on a jet ski if anyone has been drinking or is on any type of drug!

  • Know your limits and practice good water etiquette. If you see a jet ski out in the distance, don’t just race them for the next wave. Additionally, while jumping wakes is fun, but boats don’t typically want a stranger’s jet ski following them the whole day. Also, while it’s acceptable (and encouraged) to push the boundaries of your comfort zone and have fun, be smart and don’t do anything that could risk putting anyone in serious danger.

  • Keep it fun! If you jet ski regularly, try switching out the people you bring along with you. These kinds of activities are especially exciting to those who haven’t had much experience, and it can be fun for you too to take on more of a teaching role. Also, don’t be afraid to be friendly towards anyone else you may meet on the water. If you usually stick to a certain model of jet ski or boat, changing it up can be fun. Bring along a selfie stick or a GoPro to document the amazing memories you’ll make.

Jet skiing is a great activity for all ages, and it’s not difficult to learn. If you’re feeling nervous about operating a jet ski yourself, we advise you to tag along with a more experienced friend. Once you see how easy and safe it is, there’s nothing stopping you from giving it a shot yourself! Lake Mead awaits you!
