5 Water Skiing and Jet Tubing Safety Tips

At Lake Mead in sunny Las Vegas, we love all kinds of water sports. Outdoor boating and watercraft sports are some of the most exciting ways to get exercise, spend time with friends, hone your own skills, and in general have a fun-filled and memorable afternoon. Jet skiing is a popular outdoor water sport because the vehicles are extremely fast but known to be quite safe and easy to operate, even if you aren’t certified with a boater’s license. Jet skis give you the feel of weightlessness, speed, and flight, especially when you take on a big wave or the wake behind a motorboat and get some serious air time.

Why not take jet skiing to the next level and try your hand at water skiing? At Lake Mead we encourage all of our valued customers to keep pushing at the boundaries of their comfort zones. Most experienced jet skis love the feeling of standing up on the water and skiing behind the craft or even laying in tubes as well as sitting on the vehicle and steering it. If you feel like you’re ready to take your water sporting or jet skiing experience to the next level, stay tuned to check out some safety tips to make sure you’re being as safe and responsible as possible. There’s nothing more important than making sure you can be safe while having a good time.

Here are five tips to which you should always hold yourself (and your jet skiing buddies) accountable:

  1. Laws can vary according to the location, but in many public jet skiing places in America, it is required that nobody may water ski unless they are pulled behind a jet ski that can seat at least three people. The reason for this law is that somebody must be operating the vehicle and a second person will be spotting or on the lookout for any trouble so that the driver may concentrate only on steering and speed control. There must also be an additional empty seat available so that the water skier can recover safely. Another general rule of thumb is that if you are pulling a water skier who weighs about 150 to 200 pounds, the horsepower of the jet ski should be 110 or higher.
  2. A 100-foot tow rope is often required for each water ski experience. This is the ideal length for a water skier to be at a safe distance from the greatest turbulence kicked up by the jet ski engine as well as giving them enough space to clearly jump over the waves.
  3. Speaking of two lines, a safe bet is always to invest in a brightly-colored rope such as yellow, green, or orange. The high visibility is extremely beneficial. The water skier will always be able to see where they’re going and gauge their distance from the jet ski. Additionally, a bright tow line will help you to avoid running over it. Often tow lines get tangled in the intake of jet skis.
  4. If you ever drift over a tow line, immediately shut off the engine and assess the situation. If the line has gotten into the pump, it can cause a lot of damage to the inner mechanisms of the jet skis. The smartest thing to do is have your jet ski towed back to shore and lofted onto a trailer of some kind before untangling the rope manually from underneath the jet ski. This might require the removal of spark plugs or even cutting out the rope. Just be sure not to tip your jet ski onto its side while bringing it to shore or having it raised. This can pool water, mix exhaust fluids, and other emissions, causing damage to the machine.
  5. Tubes are a super fun alternative to water skis, and many people enjoy them more because they generally require less physical coordination. For instance, standing on skis requires some balance and core strength, while tubing really just requires a tight grip. If you’re pulling a tube, be sure to take it especially slow on turns. Many people are flung out of tubes on turns, and while some people believe that is only part of the fun, many others might find it scary, and of course there is a degree of danger involved.

While we’ve compiled a list of five main safety tips to pay attention to, keep in mind that you can never be too safe. If you’re completely new to jet skiing, water skiing, tubing, or any other kind of recreational outdoor watercraft, it’s extremely important that you do your research before jumping right in. Remember that safety should always come first and you should never act irresponsibly when doing a physical activity that might put yourself or others into dangerous situations. Lastly, remember to relax and have fun!
