Outdoor Water Sports Overview

At Lake Mead in Nevada, we believe there’s nothing more fun than a day out on the lake. Whether it’s speeding along in a jet ski taking on big waves or relaxing in a larger motorboat with some good friends, there’s just something about the sun and the water that draws us in.

And we know we’re not alone: it’s not for nothing that outdoor water sports and water outings are such a popular activity. Since we’re committed to trying our best to offer you the safest, most fun, ideal watercraft experiences, we thought we would give a general list and description of the most common water sports.

Maybe you’ll be inspired to give them a try, or maybe they’ll just reaffirm your preconceived notion that jet skiing is the way to go!

Open-water or “endurance” swimming. Swimming is a popular casual summertime activity, and the skill is taught to children almost as a rite of passage, as one would teach almost any physical task to children, such as walking, bicycle riding, or driving.

Open-water or “endurance” swimmers take this to the next level. Long-distance swimming requires an intense, 24/7 training regimen, including physical conditioning, a strict diet, and, of course, loads of practice.

However, at the end of the day, long-distance swimming proves to be one of those tasks people take on for the mental challenge – do you believe in yourself, how disciplined can you be – almost more than the physical challenges, which include exposure, exhaustion, muscle overuse, and, of course, drowning.

Finding out what exactly you are capable of, and pushing those limits even further, is as thrilling to these swimmers as a long jump is for jet skiers.

The greatest appeal of surfing is the sensation of weightlessness and flight. It’s a way to be up close and personal with the water while maintaining an element of control and balance that is not quite present in swimming.

However, surfing takes a lot of practice and training to get right, and it can be hard to predict whether one will have a “good” or a “bad” day, since the currents and waves can vary at the drop of a hat.

Recreational non-motor boats. These include pedalboats, kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and sailboats, each of which combines the elements of human strength, water currents, and the wind.

They put you close to the water, especially kayaks, and involve careful planning so as not to strain oneself. Ocean kayaking and ocean sailing is especially popular for those daredevils who want to experience real waves.

Jet skiing. No outdoor water sport list would be complete without jet skis! These water scooters retain the sheer speed and excitement of motorcycling while trading hard concrete for water.

You can get some serious air time by jumping over wakes and waves, and you don’t have to worry about automobile accidents or road detours.

Parasailing, water skiing, and tubing. These activities are extra fun because, almost by definition, they require a group of friends and a fast boat or jet ski for towing. Parasailing is arguably the closest you can actually get to flying, except for other activities like hang gliding, ziplining, or skydiving.

Overall, it’s a great activity for people to take turns with, because you can enjoy the water splashing in your face from the boat or the wind underneath you from the parasail. Water skiing is a bit more difficult and probably the most physical exhausting of the three, since it requires a good amount of balance, control, and upper-body strength. It’s almost guaranteed that you’ll fall off at some point, so be prepared to get some swimming in, too.

In any case, water skiing is another great in-between if you want a little bit of water activity and a little bit of flying. Tubing is just as fast and fun as water skiing, but since it requires less skills and more of a firm grip, it’s more of a family-friendly, no-experience-needed activity. You’re still pretty likely to get thrown off the tube, but people often find tubes more enjoyable than skis.

Boat racing. Racing is a fun and versatile game because you and all participants can make up the rules and guidelines as you go along. As long as everyone agrees to use (mostly) the same model of boat, the rest is really up to you.

Powerboats are a popular option for this sport since they allow you to get the real speed experience, but boats powered by oars or paddles such as kayaks, canoes, rowboats, pedalboats, or really whatever you have on hand.

Relatedly, rowing as a sport, often called “crew,” is a serious and competitive activity for those looking for a full-body workout in addition to the feeling of being on the water.

If you’re not sure what outdoor water sport is for you, we highly recommend you give multiple ones a try and stick to what you like best.

That’s why, at Adventure Excursions Lake Mead, we provide multiple models of jet skis and speedboats for you to rent out for the day, which is a great no-commitment option for those just looking for some fun. Give us a call today!
